The rapper disclosed that he had a troubling encounter with former Louisville Metro Police Officer Brett Hankinson long before the 2020 shooting death of Taylor.
In an interview with “The Breakfast Club” Friday to promote his new album, “I Ain’t Feeling You,” Gee opened up about Kentucky’s complicated history with law enforcement, referencing Taylor’s death during a conversation about his hometown.
“Kentucky’s like one of them places like, it’s like an old school, I don’t want to say crooked because I still got to be up around through there,” he explained. This led him to a chilling memory of Hankinson.
“Y’all remember the Breonna Taylor stuff?” he asked the hosts, before revealing, “He walked me home at gunpoint when I was like 10 years old in my granny’s apartment.”
Hankinson, who was involved in the fatal no-knock warrant raid that killed Taylor, faced three counts of wanton endangerment for firing into a neighboring apartment. However, his actions that night were not criminally charged in relation to her death.
Reflecting on Hankinson’s notoriety, Gee said, “He’s notorious for what he did. But it’s a bunch of them though that’s like that, you know what I’m saying?”
His comments shine a light on the broader issues with law enforcement in his Kentucky community, issues that persist despite the public outcry following Taylor’s tragic death. Hankinson was found guilty in November 2024 of violating Taylor’s civil rights. He will be sentenced next month.
