Former convict turned criminal justice advocate, Sheldon Johnson, was arrested after human remains were found in his New York City apartment.
The 48-year-old was charged with murder and dismemberment of a man. The news shocked his supporters and those who knew him for his efforts to reform himself and help others detach from gang life, VladTV reported.
Johnson, who spent 25 years in prison for attempted murder while he was a high-ranking member of the Bloods gang, has since made appearances on podcast shows where he discusses his journey towards redemption.
Neighbors reported suspicious activity at his apartment, which then lead police to find a man’s torso and two feet in a bin. Authorities probed deeper and uncovered the victim’s arms, legs, and head in Johnson’s possession, hidden in his apartment’s freezer.
Prosecutors said Johnson had attempted to disguise himself with the victim’s clothing and a wig.
Sources told investigators that the victim and Johnson had known each other from their time in prison.
Johnson is being held without bail in a New York City jail on a second-degree murder charge.
His next court date is March 11.
