Former Tallahassee Mayor and 2018 Florida gubernatorial candidate, Andrew Gillum took to social media on Monday to give an update on his health after the scandal that cost him his political career earlier this year. Although March seems like a lifetime ago, it’s been just a few short months since Gillum was found intoxicated and unresponsive by police in a Miami Beach hotel room. The man he was with that night, Travis Dyson, a known escort and gay pornography star, had reportedly overdosed on meth.
After the news broke, Gillum announced he would be taking time away from the spotlight and subsequently entered a rehabilitation program. During which time, the rumor mill began churning. Everything from his sexuality, his fidelity to his wife, and more were discussed publicly and at lengths. In an 11-minute update posted to his Instagram page, the former Mayor sent thanks and well wishes to those cheering him on during this difficult time. He also discussed his time in rehab, his addiction, the public shame, and the depression he faced during his recovery.
“Personal update,” his caption read. “I am thankful to so many of you who have wished me well during this especially challenging time. I wanted to provide a personal update on how I have been doing. Take good care of yourselves during this season, and I will see you on the other side. Warmest, Andrew.”
