Disgraced USA Gymnastics physician Larry Nassar has sustained severe injuries after being stabbed several times in a prison attack over the weekend.
Sources close to the situation reported that the incident took place on Sunday inside the United States Penitentiary Coleman in Florida. Nassar was struck by a fellow inmate, resulting in severe injuries. ABC 7 News reports that the convicted child molester was stabbed in the neck, chest, and back several times. During the stabbing, he also sustained a collapsed lung. As of now, he is listed in stable condition. No other inmates were hurt in the attack.
“Responding staff immediately initiated life-saving measures. The inmate was transported by (emergency personnel) to a local hospital for further treatment and evaluation,” bureau spokesperson Benjamin O’Cone said in a statement.
Nassar is serving out the remainder of his life behind bars after receiving hundreds of years for sexually abusing members of the USA Gymnastics team during his tenure as team doctor. It is estimated that he molested and raped over 500 girls and women, which he did through his close work with the gymnasts. One of his most notable victims includes Olympic gold medalist Simone Biles. Additionally, Nassar was also convicted of owning child pornography. He eventually fessed up abusing the girls both at Michigan State University and at the USA Gymnastics training facility.
It’s unclear what prompted the jailhouse attack other than the fact that he may have been targeted due to the brutality of his own crimes.
