Anthony Hamilton graced the red carpet at the Black Music Action Coalition (BMAC) Gala, where he spoke with Baller Alert’s correspondent Ty Cole about what it takes to remain a timeless artist in an ever-evolving music industry. Looking dapper and as suave as ever, the soulful singer shared his thoughts on longevity, equality for Black artists, and the whereabouts of the legendary ‘Charlene.’
When asked about his secret to staying relevant while so many others have come and gone, Anthony emphasized the importance of consistency. “When people can depend on you to give them that good feeling that you gave them the first time, and you’re consistent with that, you make yourself feel like home to somebody. They’ll stick with you,” he said. Anthony’s commitment to delivering soulful, authentic music has clearly resonated with fans who have remained loyal to his sound over the years.
Navigating the music industry isn’t easy, and Anthony knows this better than most. When asked what he would change about the industry if he could, he didn’t hesitate to highlight the disparities that still exist. “I think for artists to get paid what they’re worth, no matter the genre, and for Black artists to get the same push as white pop, rock, and alternative artists,” he stated. Anthony’s call for equality in the industry speaks to the broader issues that many Black musicians face in gaining the same visibility and opportunities as their counterparts in other genres.
And of course, no conversation with Anthony Hamilton would be complete without mentioning his iconic hit “Charlene.” When asked where he thinks Charlene is now, Anthony flashed his signature smile and said, “Somewhere over the rainbow.” It’s a playful reminder that while the song may be over a decade old, its impact and the questions it raises are still very much alive in the hearts of his fans.
Anthony Hamilton’s career is a testament to the power of staying true to oneself and the importance of addressing inequalities within the music industry. As he continues to evolve as an artist, his voice—both in song and in advocacy—remains as powerful and relevant as ever.
We’re excited to see what’s next for Anthony and hope that, wherever Charlene is, she’s still listening to his timeless tunes.
