Fabolous recently shared a valuable lesson he learned after Beyoncé confronted him about a line he rapped about her sister, Solange, on his 2010 track “For The Money” featuring Nicki Minaj.
During an appearance on The Pivot, the Brooklyn rapper recalled when Queen Bey personally addressed him for a bar that referenced both her and Solange. The line, “Because if you could have Beyoncé, would you take Solange?” from his There Is No Competition 2 (The Funeral Service) mixtape, didn’t sit well with the Houston native.
Fab explained that, at the time, he didn’t think much of the line, assuming that it was just a clever metaphor. However, Beyoncé took the opportunity to remind him how impactful words can be and how they can affect those on the receiving end.
“You never know who’s listening, and sometimes you could say something where you just like for me it was kind of like one of those self-phrases or metaphorically just trying to get my point across or, you know, kind of making her the butt of the joke,” Fab said on The Pivot. “But one of the things from it, even when I spoke to Solange, she said, ‘You never know who’s listening or who is affected by what you’re saying.’ So I took that in as an older hip-hop artist now. Before that, I didn’t care; I would just say anything.”
Fab first opened up about the confrontation in 2020 during an interview with The Breakfast Club, where he revealed that the situation made him more mindful of his lyrics. After the incident, Fab attempted to apologize to Solange, but it was clear that she wasn’t ready to let it go. He described her as “stiff as a rock” during their interaction, acknowledging that she was understandably upset.
“I saw her, so I was like, all right, let me beeline to Solange and apologize. And Solange, she was stiff. I’m like, ‘Hey! What’s up?’ And I was like, ‘Yo, I just want you to know I didn’t mean it in any malice, but I do take responsibility for saying that and I apologize,’” Fab shared.
