Facebook has added a warning label to a doctored video Donald Trump shared of Joe Biden.
The video, first posted by the White House’s director on social media Saturday and then shared by Trump, was edited to make it seem that Biden was endorsing Trump.
By Monday, Facebook added the warning label saying the clip included “partly false information,” according to Variety. Twitter had already done so.
Facebook released a statement about the video, saying, “Fact-checkers rated this video as partly false, so we are reducing its distribution and showing warning labels with more context for people who see it, try to share it, or already have.”
The clip was from Biden’s rally in Kansas City, Missouri, on Saturday, where the former VP said: “Excuse me. We can only re-elect Donald Trump if, in fact, we get engaged in this circular firing squad here. It’s got to be a positive campaign, so join us.”
But in the edited version, Biden says, “We cannot win this re-election. Excuse me, we can only re-elect Donald Trump.”
Trump shared the video to Facebook and retweeted on Twitter with the comment, “I agree with Joe!”
The doctored Biden video was viewed at least 1 million times on Facebook before the warning label was added. However, CNN Fact Checker Daniel Dale said, “The clip was edited to cut out the second part of Biden’s sentence,” adding that, “Biden had called for an end to “negative attacks” in his primary contest with Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders.”
