The fake Florida doctor who convinced Donald Trump that bleach was a viable COVID-19 cure will stand trial in Miami for selling the toxic “miracle cure.”
Mark Grenon was arrested in August 2020 with his 34-year-old son Joseph. The two had been detained in Colombia after trying to flee the U.S.
Grenon’s other sons, 36-year-old Jonathan and 28-year-old Jordan were arrested that same month in Miami, where they’ve been jailed since.Â
Grenon and Joseph were recently extradited back to Florida, where they face a long list of charges for selling the potentially deadly concoction to thousands of people. On Thursday, Grenon and his sons were arraigned on charges of conspiring to defraud the government and criminal contempt. The men will stand trial on September 12th.
According to prosecutors, the Grenons sold thousands of victims their “Miracle Mineral Solution,” or “MMS,” as it is widely called. The chemical solution contained sodium chlorite and water that became chlorine dioxide when ingested orally. Chlorine Dioxide is a poisonous compound used as an industrial disinfectant. In high concentrations, it is used as bleach. MMS became a hot ticket item at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, as panic and the slow development of a vaccine led people to seek alternative protections and cures.Â
Prior to the pandemic, the Grenons marketed and sold jugs of the bleach-based liquid under the guise that they were healers. Grenon touted himself as the head of the Genesis II Church of Health and Healing, claiming his MMS creation could cure cancer, HIV, and other ailments.Â
The Grenon family made more than $1 million in sales and took credit for Trump promoting drinking bleach as an early solution to curing the coronavirus. In a 2021 interview from behind bars, Grenon says he was able to reach the Trump family and give them bottles of MMS.Â
When ingested, MMS can cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and severe dehydration. The FDA previously issued several warnings regarding MMS and its consumption.
