As the family of Miya Marcano continues to grapple with her murder, they have now decided to take action against the apartment complex where she lived and worked.
The family of Marcano filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the property for failing to do more to protect the young college student. The suit names Arden Villas Apartments LLC, which manages the Arden Villas Luxury Apartments in Orlando, Florida, and The Preiss Company, which runs it.
Marcano disappeared on September 24th. She was supposed to visit her family in South Florida but never arrived. Shortly after she went missing, Armando Manuel Caballero, a maintenance employee with Arden Villas, became a person of interest. During the search for Marcano, Caballero killed himself. Authorities determined that he’d entered Marcano’s home using the master key and waited for her to arrive. The body of Miya Marcano was found on October 2nd at a separate apartment complex that Caballero had ties to.
The family believes that Arden Villas was negligent in Marcano’s death by allowing Caballero to have virtually unlimited access to her home using the master key.
“Arden Villas gave Armando Caballero the unfettered access he needed to kill Miya. They need to be held accountable for their negligence,” the family’s attorney Daryl K. Washington stated in a news release.
The family is seeking over $30,000 in damages and is requesting a jury trial.
