In July of 2015, #SandraBland was pulled over by State Trooper #BrianEncinia for switching lanes without signaling. Most of the encounter was caught on tape, via the officers’ dash camera. The interaction escalated, leading to Bland’s controversial arrest.
Days later, Bland was found dead in #WallerCounty jail. A medical examiner claimed Bland committed suicide by suffocating herself with a plastic garbage bag, however, Bland’s family believed otherwise.
Since then, Bland’s arrest and death sparked nationwide debates and protest of police brutality and their mistreatment of minorities. According to #NYDailyNews, the arresting officer was fired following an indictment on perjury charges.
In addition, as of Thursday (September 15), the family of Sandra Bland has settled a wrongful death lawsuit for $1.9 million dollars.
According to reports, the #Texas jail, where Bland died will be responsible for most of the payment. Waller County jail will cough up $1.8 million and the Texas Department of Public Safety will pay $100,000.
