Fans are calling for a boycott of ABC over the new cast for “Dancing with the Stars.”
The new season of #DWTS is quickly approaching, and the new cast has already been announced. “Bachelorette” Hannah Brown, “Queer Eye” star Karamo Brown, former NBA star #LamarOdom, actor James Van Der Beek, supermodel Christie Brinkely, former NFL star #RayLewis, country superstar Lauren Alaina, former Fifth Harmony member Ally Brooke, actress Kate Flannery, comedian #KelMitchell and The Supremes music legend #MaryWilson are all set to join the show as the new contestants.
But, there’s one contestant that fans aren’t excited about and that’s former White House Press Secretary #SeanSpicer. Spicer resigned from #DonaldTrump’s administration back in 2017 after repeatedly making false statements while working in the White House. He was replaced by #SarahHuckabeeSanders. His casting has sparked online outrage, prompting people to call for a boycott of the show’s 28th season.
“It’s disgusting that Dancing With the Stars has cast Sean Spicer. The man lied to our country repeatedly and debased our government — all while promoting an agenda of hate. Don’t watch,” one user wrote.
Even longtime TV personality and DWTS host #TomBergeron didn’t seem too happy about Spicer being on the program. On Wednesday, he tweeted a statement after the casting was announced. “Chief among them was my hope that DWTS, in its return from an unprecedented year-long hiatus, would be a joyful respite from our exhausting political climate and free of inevitably divisive bookings from any party affiliation,” Bergeron wrote.
“I left that lunch convinced we were in agreement.” Bergeron didn’t mention Spicer directly, but, he noted in his post that the show’s producers decided to “go in a different direction.” “We can all agree to disagree, as we do now, but ultimately it’s their call,” he said. “I’ll leave it to them to answer any further questions about those decisions.”
During the announcement on “Good Morning America,” Bergeron joked about Spicer being cast. “The nice thing is, Sean will be in charge of assessing audience size,” a slight towards the crowd size at the 2017 inauguration. But social media clapped back at Bergeron’s joke, calling it inappropriate. “None of this is funny. This man knowingly and blatantly lied to the American people in his official capacity as a government servant of the people. He helped create the atrocity that is still in office. Shame on ABC,” a user wrote.
