Fantasia Taylor, Danielle Brooks, Coleman Domingo, and more are set to star in The Color Purple‘s upcoming musical film.
The Color Purple is getting a revamp, and some of the biggest names been cast. “Orange is the New Black” star Danielle Brooks will play “Sofia,” Taraji P. Henson will play “Shug Avery,” Coleman Domingo will “Mister,” Halle Bailey will play a young “Nettie” and Fantasia will play the iconic role and star of the film “Celie.” Singer-songwriter, H.E.R. is set to make her acting debut as Squeak.
The film comes 37 years after the original Steven Spielberg film, which is an adaption of the 1982 novel by American author Alice Walker. The novel, which one a Pulitzer Prizer in 1983, tells the story of Celie, a Black American teen girl who is stripped away from her sister and forced into an abusive marriage. As the years go by, Celie goes through various struggles that are thrown her way while isolated in rural Georgia. She details her life in letters to God and her sister, with who she is one day reunited.
The film is set to debut in theaters in December 2023. According to an email sent to Baller Alert, production for the film begins in March in Atlanta.
Oprah Winfrey, Steven Spielberg and Quincy Jones are coming back together in partnership with Scott Sanders to produce the film. The film will be executive produced by Alice Walker, Rebecca Walker, Mara Jacobs, Carla Gardini, Kristie Macosko Krieger and Adam Fell. The script is by Marcus Gardley and is based on the novel, the 1985 film and the musical stage play. Fatima Robinson will choreograph it.
