A Southern California man killed the mother of his child during a custody exchange.
On Sunday, 28-year-old Brenda Renteria was fatally shot by her child’s father, 31-year-old Jacob Munn, during a custody exchange outside of the Hawthorne Police Department. Renteria was with her family and 17-month-old son.
The shooting happened around 6 p.m. at the entrance to the lobby of the police station, Lt. Gary Tomatani of the HPD said. The child was already inside the police station when the mother arrived to pick the child up. When she approached the father, he fired at least one shot using a shotgun. Munn’s mother was with him during the shooting.
When Munn fired his shot, an officer heard the gunfire and fired back, but Munn was able to get away in his car, according to KTLA. Police reported Munn’s vehicle was abandoned over a half a mile south of the police station. However, police were able to catch him three hours later in the 4400 block of 134th Street, not far from where his car was discovered. The shotgun was also found.
Police are still investigating the incident, and are interviewing members of Munn’s family.
