Authorities have confirmed that a body “consistent with the description of” Gabby Petito, was discovered in the Bridger-Teton National Forest in Wyoming.
This brings a tragic end to the search for the 22-year-old woman who went missing while taking a cross-country road trip with her boyfriend, Brian Laundrie.
Petito’s family reported her missing on Sept. 11, a full two weeks after the last time they spoke with her.
Charles Jones, the FBI’s supervisory senior resident agent, said that a full forensic identification hadn’t been completed yet, and a cause of death could not yet be determined.
“We continue to seek information from anyone who utilized the Spread Creek Dispersed Camping Area between the dates of August 27 and August 30. Anyone that may have had contact with Gabby, or her boyfriend, or who may have seen their vehicle in that area, please share any new information with the FBI,” Jones told the media during a news conference Sunday evening in Grand Teton National Park.
This news comes as authorities are actively searching for Laundrie, who was named a “person of interest” in the investigation into Petito’s disappearance.
The 23-year-old aroused suspicion when he returned home more than two weeks ago in his missing girlfriend’s van and refused to speak to the police. He was reported “missing” by his family last Tuesday.
