The FBI (Federal Bureau of Investigation) is currently investigating an incident that occurred on Saturday (June 13) in Marion, a small town in Virginia. Around 2 p.m., several members of the local “Black Lives Matter” movement group, also known as the New Panthers, marched the streets of Marion, to serve as part of a movement that was ignited by the death of George Floyd, who was killed while in police custody. Among those protestors was Travon Brown, the march’s leader.
Reports state that hours after the New Panther group held their first march, “March for Marion,” Brown, discovered what seemed to be a wooden cross burning in a barrel in front of his home.
He believes the burning of the “cross” was meant as a scare tactic to stop him from leading protests.
“It didn’t work…the scaring tactic didn’t work,” Brown said. “It only made me stronger. [I’m] coming back more powerful than ever, and I just hope that they pray about it…move on.”
One local resident and business owner believes that those opposing Brown and other residents protesting are not seeing the big picture and that “BLM” is a much-needed demonstration for Marion.
Kathleen Cobbs, the owner of the Downtown Resale Boutique, stated:
“I do have neighbors and things that don’t like to hear black lives matter. They want to tell you that all lives matter. But right now, when you try to tell them, ‘Yes, it’s true all lives matter; however, right now we need to support our black community because they’re getting hurt more.’”
She also says that she fears for the safety of Brown and his family as he continues to speak out against systematic racism.
“I’m just worried that the family is going to be targeted because their son is excited and trying to support himself and his future by letting people understand that being black is not easy in this society,” Cobbs said.
As far as Brown is concerned, the march leader states that he will continue to protest going forward.
“I’m stronger than ever,” Brown. “It gives me more motivation to keep doing what I’m doing.”
He also hopes that the people in the community can come together to find a positive way to discuss the current Black Lives Matter movement.
“Come talk to me. We can have a civil conversation as two young adults or adults.”
The reported incident is still under investigation.
