FDA Recalls Lay's Classic Potato Chips Over "Life-Threatening" Dairy Contamination

While news continues to break surrounding food recalls, the latest product to get hit with a recall is Frito-Lay’s popular Classic Potato Chips.

According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the recall was issued due to undeclared milk in the product.

To be specific, the order specifically applies to the 13-ounce bags that are sold in Oregon and Washington. The bags include a “Guaranteed Fresh” date of February 11th, 2025, and manufacturing codes:  6462307xx or 6463307xx. Despite the packaging label only listing potatoes, vegetable oil, and salt as ingredients, the presence of milk, which is not included on the label, has raised concerns for individuals with dairy allergies and sensitivities.

“Those with an allergy or severe sensitivity to milk run the risk of a serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume the recalled product,” the FDA wrote in its announcement.

Even though no allergic reactions have been reported, Frito-Lay urges customers to discard any affected products they may have in their homes and contact the company’s Customer Service department to gain further assistance. Additionally, they also stated that none of their other products nor flavors are a part of the recall.

Frito-Lay’s recall is just the latest in a series of food safety incidents. Earlier this year, an E. Coli outbreak occurred that was linked to onions used in McDonald’s Quarter Pounder hamburgers. The outbreak reportedly sickened over 100 individuals across 14 states and resulted in one death. Around that same time, cucumbers that were distributed by SunFed Produce were recalled in 26 states and Canada following suspected salmonella contamination.
