This past weekend, police arrested a fifth-grader in Florida because he allegedly claimed via text he was going to perform a mass shooting, NBC News reports.
A 10-year-old student in Lee County is accused of sending out a “threatening text message,” according to a statement from the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, which said it learned about the text message earlier on Saturday.
Following an investigation, the boy was interviewed and subsequently charged with “making a written threat to conduct a mass shooting.”
This incident comes just days after the Robb Elementary School mass shooting. “This student’s behavior is sickening, especially after the recent tragedy in Uvalde, Texas,” said Lee County Sheriff Carmine Marceno in a statement. “Right now is not the time to act like a little delinquent. It’s not funny,” he said, NBC News reports. “This child made a fake threat, and now he’s experiencing real consequences.”
