Ron DeSantis, the “anti-woke” Florida governor known for his staunch conservative beliefs, is officially running for president.
Despite initially gaining prominence by aligning himself with and supporting Donald Trump, DeSantis now seems to have decided to challenge the former president for the Republican Party’s nomination.
The 44-year-old filed paperwork with the Federal Election Commission ahead of his Twitter Spaces conversation with Elon Musk Wednesday evening, where he plans to announce his bid formally.
In 2020, DeSantis began garnering a significant national following due to his hands-off approach to the Covid pandemic. He further expanded his influence by positioning Florida at the forefront of cultural battles that deeply resonate with conservative base voters. In his most recent controversy, the governor is embroiled in a lawsuit with Disney following allegations from the entertainment giant that he engaged in government retaliation following their public opposition to his “Don’t Say Gay” bill.
