Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed off on a piece of legislation Monday to crack down on what he calls social media “censorship.” The bill is in response to DeSantis’ beliefs that social media platforms are censoring conservatives.

According to NBC Miami, DeSantis touted the bill as safeguarding Floridians’ access to social media platforms. One of the critical pieces of the legislation introduces a $250,000 fine per day against platforms that suspend the accounts of political figures.

“One of their major missions seems to be suppressing ideas that are either inconvenient to the narrative or which they personally disagree with,” he said at the signing.

The bill, named SB 7072, requires social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter to be transparent content moderation practices. The bill also requires them to provide notice to users of their moderation policies.

Under Florida’s Unfair and Deceptive Trade Practices Act, the state’s attorney general can bring legal action against any tech companies that violate the law.
