Tragedy has recently stuck a Port St. Joe, Florida community after high schooler Chance Gainer collapsed on the field during a football game and later died.
On Friday, the 18-year-old senior, who played for Port St. Joe High School, which was facing off against Liberty County High School, was participating in the match as normal. Gainer was making a significant impact on the field before the incident. Earlier in the game, he scored a 70-yard touchdown. But, as he was running towards a play, Gainer suddenly collapsed.
“He just went to the ground suddenly,” said Tim Davis, Port St. Joe’s athletic director and vice principal, said.
As soon as Gainer hit the ground, coaches and trainers rushed to his side, signaling for paramedics. Gainer was then transported to the hospital, but despite medical efforts, he passed away shortly after. According to Davis, there were only four minutes left in the game when they learned Gainer’s fate.
“The scene was heartbreaking,” Davis added. “Parents came down on the field to comfort their kids. Such a helpless feeling.”
Additionally, while administrators were aware of Gainer’s death, they decided to wait until the game concluded to inform his teammates. They were then led by a police escort to the hospital where Gainer had been taken and shared a heartfelt moment before heading home.
Gainer’s untimely death leaves a deep void in the school and the community. He was an honors student who had visited Vanderbilt University just days before the game with the intention of potentially attending the school after graduation. Gulf County School Superintendent Jim Norton spoke highly of Gainer and described him as a young man who had not only “world-class speed” but “a world-class personality.”
Tragically, the National Federation of State High School Associations shared that six high school football players died within the past month, four due to heart-related issues and two from injuries during the game.
