Florida has officially passed a bill that will ban a woman from getting an abortion after 15 weeks.
On Thursday, an anti-abortion bill pushed by Republican legislators was set as law. Women in Florida will no longer have the right to request an abortion after 15 weeks or roughly three and half months into pregnancy. “Serious” risks to the woman or fatal fetal abnormality are the exceptions to the law. However, rape or incest are not included as special cases.
Planned Parenthood Action Fund condemned the passing of the law, which they said was made in the “in the dead of night and without the public present.” The bill was officially passed after midnight Thursday after hours of debate.
“This vote is disrespectful and cruel to all Floridians. Stripping people of the freedom to make the best medical decision for themselves and their families is wrong, and our elected representatives should know better,” Stephanie Fraim, president and CEO of Planned Parenthood of Southwest and Central Florida, said in a statement, CNN Politics reports. “This isn’t what the people of Florida want.”
