A Florida reporter has gone viral for her decision to use a condom to protect her microphone from pouring rain while covering Hurricane Ian.
A condom can protect you against some sexually-transmitted diseases and can help lessen the chance of a woman getting pregnant. But who would have thought a condom would ever be used to block rainfall from hitting a microphone? Well, in the world of news, you gotta do what you gotta do.
Kyla Galer is making headlines, not only because she’s a real-life journalist but because she’s the journalist who placed a condom on her microphone while covering Hurricane Ian in Florida. The contraceptive began sparking conversation online, with many people commenting online asking what was on top of the mic. Galer ended up taking to Instagram to spill the beans.
“A lot of people are asking what is on my microphone,” she said. “It is what you think it is. It’s a condom. It helps protect the gear. We can’t get these mics wet. There’s a lot of wind and a lot of rain, so we gotta do what we gotta do, and that is put a condom on the microphone.”
Another reporter named Jeff Butera chimed in to back Galer up.
“WE PRACTICE SAFE HURRICANE REPORTING,” he tweeted. “Yes, it’s a condom. Nothing better to waterproof a microphone. My Waterman Broadcasting colleague @kylagaler has been fielding lots of questions, haha. Moment of levity in this nasty storm…#HurricaneIan.”
