Governor Ron DeSantis has announced that a civics test will now be required of high school seniors in Florida in order to graduate.
The test will be very similar to the citizenship test taken by individuals applying for U.S. citizenship.
“Most surveys typically show that less than 25% of young people are capable of answering basic questions about American government and American civics… We have to do better,” DeSantis said in a news conference on Tuesday.
DeSantis has not released any specific dates or timelines in relation to when the test will be implemented.
As of now, students who do not pass the test will still be able to graduate.
“For now, a student who does not pass the civics exam may still graduate from high school if all other requirements are fulfilled,” a spokesperson for the governor told The News Service of Florida.
