Authorities say a 13-year-old boy in Florida has confessed to fatally stabbing his mother as she slept Thursday night.
The minor suspect called police in Hialeah and told them he killed his mother, Local 10 News reported.
“He called right away; he called after he did it and pretty much turned himself in over the phone, I guess you could say,” said Hialeah Police Lt. Eddie Rodriguez.
Authorities have released the mother’s identity as Irina Garcia, 39, PEOPLE reported.
The suspect was later identified as Derek Rosa. He was charged with second-degree murder. He appeared in court Friday afternoon, WSVN News reported.
When police arrived at Apartment 201 along the 200 block of West 79th Place they found the mother dead next to a crib where there was a two-week-old baby, who was left unharmed.
A Hialeah Police Department spokesperson later reported that the baby was the suspect’s half-sister.
According to the police spokesperson, the minor suspect is a middle school honor student and was reportedly apologetic when officers arrived at the home, Local 10 stated.
“We don’t know, that’s something that we’re still trying to figure out,” Hialeah police spokesperson Eddie Rodriguez, addressing a possible motive, told NBC. “He did not say why he did this, all he did was call 911 and advise what he did.”
Officers said that the suspect’s stepfather also lives at the residence, but was not home at the time because he is a trucker.
