Floyd Mayweather spoke about Gervonta “Tank” Davis asking to leave Mayweather Promotions during a sit-down with Earn Your Leisure’s viral Podcast Market Mondays at Madison Square Garden on Nov. 27. And Mayweather had nothing negative to say about his protege.
“It’s nothing like taking a kid that come from the same background as you and helping them and putting them in a position to become a multi-millionaire,” he said. “You meet a kid, he come up to you for an autograph, you sign a autograph for him, and then I tell him, ‘In a few years, when you get older, I’m gonna work with you, and I’m gonna make you a world champion someday.’”
He added, “Years later, I started working with him, helped him, pushed him to be great, and if he feels like he grew wings where he can fly and become his own boss, more power to him.”

Davis recently spoke in a Twitter Spaces conversation about parting ways with Mayweather Promotions. He gave Mayweather props and expressed that it was all love, despite the split from Mayweather’s company.
“First and foremost, love to Mayweather Promotions and all that they have done for me, but I am definitely out of my contract, for sure,” he said, confirming that he is a free agent.
Davis set to defend his 135-pound title against Hector Luis Garcia in Washington, D.C., on January 7.
