Ford is hitting the brakes on nearly half a million of its popular SUVs. The automaker announced a recall of about 499,000 vehicles in the United States, including Ford Edge models built between 2015 and 2018 and Lincoln MKX models from 2016 to 2018.
The problem centers on a rear brake jounce hose that can rupture and leak fluid. That leak could cause drivers to need longer stopping distances, which increases the risk of a crash. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration confirmed the issue and pushed for the recall.
Ford says there have been no crashes or injuries tied to the problem so far. Still, safety experts estimate around one percent of the recalled SUVs may actually be affected, which comes out to about 5,000 vehicles.
Drivers might notice signs like a soft or spongy brake pedal, more travel when pressing the brake, or a warning light if fluid levels drop too low.
Dealers are already on alert, and Ford says interim letters will go out to owners starting in early September. The bigger issue is that the actual fix will not be ready until April 2026. Until then, Ford owners are urged to check their vehicle identification numbers and stay cautious.
