Authorities in Georgia have confirmed that former NFL player Demaryius Thomas was found dead in his home Thursday. He was 33 years old.
According to Tim Lupo, a police spokesman in Roswell, Georgia, preliminary investigation indicates that his death was caused by a medical issue.
“Our investigators currently have no reason to believe otherwise,” he said.
Thomas’ cousin, LaTonya Bonseigneur told AP that Thomas may have died from a seizure.
She said, “He had been suffering from seizures for over a year, and we believe he had a seizure when he was showering.”
“We’re not sure when he died. We just spoke with him yesterday,” she added.
Thomas was only 15 days away from his 34th birthday on Christmas Day.
The Denver Broncos released a statement on Twitter that read, “Thomas was an incredible player and a special person.”
“We are devastated and completely heartbroken,” wrote the organization.
“Recently retiring as a Bronco, we were very much looking forward to celebrating Demaryius for years to come as one of the greatest players in franchise history.”
A statement was also released on NFL’s official Twitter account, “The NFL family mourns the tragic loss of Demaryius Thomas and we extend our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones.”
