Former NFL player De’Von Hall, who was accused of murdering his mother #AleciaBenson, has been found not guilty by reason of insanity.

Back in April 2017, police responded to a disturbance call in the Windsor Hills neighborhood of Los Angeles. When they arrived, authorities found Benson, 48, on her back in her home, brutally beaten, unconscious and fighting for her life. Hall, who is Benson’s only child, was seen outside the house in the middle of the street smoking a cigarette. When police tried to restrain him, he fought three officers before they could handcuff him. Days later, he was charged with killing his mother.

According to the 911 call, a witness said Hall, 32, attacked his mother. “He hit her. He stomped her out. They got in a tussling match, and next thing you know, she was on the ground, and he was stomping her out,” the witness told the dispatcher.

However, last week, Judge Lauren Weis Bernstein ruled in Los Angeles County Superior Court Hall that the 32-year-old was found not guilty by reason of insanity. “Alecia Benson was a wonderful mother who tragically died,” said Hall’s public defender, according to the Los Angeles Times. “Mr. Hall will now go to a state hospital to get the type of mental health treatment that Ms. Benson always wanted for her son.”

Hall spent a short time in the NFL. Following his football career, Hall reportedly endured mental health issues and struggled with homelessness, until his mother eventually took him in. Hall spent two months living with his mother before she died. Hall played for Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Indianapolis Colts.
