A former nurse who pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting an intellectually disabled woman in a long-term health care facility in Arizona was sentenced Thursday to 10 years in prison.
In 2018, Nathan D. Sutherland was accused of impregnating a female patient while in a vegetative state at the facility.
Prosecutors claimed the victim shocked employees at the Hacienda HealthCare facility in Phoenix when she gave birth. One employee told a 911 dispatcher, “We had no idea she was pregnant.”
Court records show that Sutherland pleaded guilty in September to sexual assault and abusing a vulnerable adult. He will be placed on lifetime probation and required to register as a sex offender upon release from prison.
