Farewell Ceremonies Begin for Former President Jimmy Carter

Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter waves to the congregation after teaching Sunday school at Maranatha Baptist Church in his hometown of Plains, Georgia on April 28, 2019. Carter, 94, has taught Sunday school at the church on a regular basis since leaving the White House in 1981, drawing hundreds of visitors who arrive hours before the 10:00 am lesson in order to get a seat and have a photograph taken with the former President and former First Lady Rosalynn Carter. Former President Jimmy Carter will begin receiving hospice care after several hospital stays, the Carter Center announced Saturday.

“After a series of short hospital stays, former U.S. President Jimmy Carter today decided to spend his remaining time at home with his family and receive hospice care instead of additional medical intervention,” the center said in a statement. “He has the full support of his family and his medical team. The Carter family asks for privacy during this time and is grateful for the concern shown by his many admirers.”

Carter became the 39th president in 1977. He held one term and has become the oldest-living and longest-lived president. However, his health has seriously declined in recent years, ABC News reported.

He beat brain cancer in 2015, and a series of health scares in 2019, CNN reported.

Carter is well known for his fight for human rights. His brokering of the Camp David Accords in 1978 with Egyptian President Anwar Sadat and Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin remains at the peak of his legacy.

Following his presidential term, Carter founded The Carter Center with his wife, Rosalynn, hoping to advance world peace and health. The center aims to promote democracy by monitoring foreign elections and reducing diseases in developing countries.

Carter also received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 for his efforts to push for peace across the globe.
