As the coronavirus continues to sweep the nation, infecting over 752,000 worldwide and over 139,000 in the United States, New York has been deemed a ‘war zone,’ compared to the rest of the country.
With over 59,600 New Yorkers infected, and more than 1,000 dead as of Sunday, the pandemic is getting personal for many Americans across the country.
Over the weekend, the deadly virus claimed the life of local basketball star Lee Green. He was 49.
According to the NY Post, Green was a retired Brooklyn police officer and DJ, but his glory days came in his early years as an All-American from Tolentine High School.
From there, he went on to reach two NCAA Tournaments with St. John’s, where he played from 1991-1994.
“He was our defensive lockdown guy,” St. John’s director of sports medicine and longtime head trainer Ron Linfonte said. “He could score if he needed to. He was one of the guys who really relished the role of ‘Give me your best player, and I’ll lock him down.’ He sacrificed his offense a lot for the good of the team, and he was everybody’s favorite.”
According to the publication, though Green wasn’t believed to have any preexisting medical conditions, he reportedly contracted the virus during a DJ event.
