Police found former Tallahassee mayor and Democratic gubernatorial nominee Andrew Gillum passed out in a hotel room with a male escort and several different drugs.
Gillum, 40, and married father-of-three was found naked in a hotel room at Mondrian South Beach last Friday, and police say he was too “inebriated” to explain to authorities what happened. With him were two males, Travis Dyson, 30, and Aldo Mejias, 56, the Daily Mail reports.
Inside the room were baggies of “crystal meth,” pills, empty beer bottles that laid on top, and around soiled bedsheets. Police also obtained an injectable medicine containing alprostadil, which is typically used to treat erectile dysfunction. According to reports, the mess is a result of a party Gillum threw inside the hotel. Dyson was taken to the hospital and is expected to make a full recovery.
Police were called to the hotel when Dyson collapsed after vomiting. Mejias told officers that he walked in to find Gillum and Dyson “under the influence of an unknown substance” and Gillum throwing up in the bathroom. Pills covered the hotel floor, and the bedroom’s sheets were stained with bodily fluids. According to the Miami Police Department, officers were called to the hotel at 12:55 a.m. last Friday after reports of a guest suffering a cardiac arrest.
After the story broke, Gillum issued a statement hours later, apologizing for his alcohol abuse, and said he never used meth. Gillum claims he was in south Florida attending a wedding but Dyson the Miami New Times that he’s known Gillum “for a while” and that he knew nothing about a wedding. In Gillum’s statement, he acknowledged his alcohol issue and revealed he would be going to rehab.
“After a conversation with my family and deep reflection, I have made the decision to seek help, guidance, and enter a rehabilitation facility at this time. This has been a wake-up call for me. Since my race for governor ended, I fell into a depression that has led to alcohol abuse,” he said. “I want to apologize to my family, friends, and the people of Florida who have supported me and put their faith in me over the years.” He has asked that people respect the privacy of his family.
