Despite a legal battle with Apple, Epic CEO Tim Sweeney has indicated that Fortnite would return to iOS in 2023.
The game was previously removed from the App Store for violating Apple’s policies in August 2020.
Sweeney tweeted the news to welcome the new year. “Next year on iOS!” he wrote.
With iOS 17, Apple will soon allow third-party app stores or sideloading applications to comply with the Digital Markets Act rule in Europe.
As a result, this might make it possible for Fortnite to return to iOS and iPadOS. However, access to the game via the App Store is not necessary.
After being removed from the App Store, Epic Games filed a lawsuit against Apple, and that legal battle is still ongoing.Â
Sweeney said, “We’re fighting for open platforms and policy changes equally benefiting all developers. And it’ll be a hell of a fight!”
According to reports, Apple and Epic Games are contesting a court ruling that would force Apple to provide in-app connections to other websites, bypassing Apple’s App Store payment system.
Epic Games argues that the iPhone should support alternative app stores since Apple’s monopoly over iOS and the App Store are anti-competitive.
On the other hand, Apple insists that both users and developers may continue safely and reliably searching for and finding programs in the App Store.
