Fourth Set Of Remains Found Could Be Of Rasheem Ryelle Carter

Mississippi authorities have found a fourth set of human remains near where 25-year-old Rasheem Ryelle Carter was allegedly lynched.

On November 2, 2022, authorities found Carter’s remains on a property in Smith County. On May 10, authorities were recorded finding more remains on that site, Clarion Ledger reported.

A second set of human remains were discovered nearby at an unspecified date, and a third set was found on April 26, 2023.

Carter was reported missing on October 2, 2022, in Laurel after being followed by four white men in a truck just after leaving the Smith County Sheriff’s Office asking for help. His family has pressed authorities for answers on the mystery surrounding his death. His mother, Tiffany Carter, would like to know if the additional remains found belong to her son.

Civil Rights attorney Ben Crump is representing the family and said the family and his legal team were made aware of the fourth set of remains found but waited for confirmation from the Mississippi Crime Lab if they were Carter’s.

The crime lab previously said they could not confirm the cause of the young man’s death. Carter was found decapitated, and his remains spread out. Authorities suggested animals could have done it.

“We refuse to accept the death of Rasheem Carter was due to natural causes,” Crump said. “We believe the new set of remains belongs to Rasheem after being found within the vicinity of other remains. Within the video, you can see an arm attached to a hand. We are thankful for the citizen notifying the Carter family and our legal team. The Mississippi Crime Lab and The Taylorsville Sheriff’s Department have failed to notify us of any information upon finding the fourth set of human remains.”

The family is offering a $50,000 reward for information to help find out what happened to Rasheem.

“We must continue to pressure Mississippi officials for this investigation to get justice,” Crump said.
