Last week Michelle Obama and comedian Jay Pharoah teamed up  with ‘College Humor’ to create a rap song encouraging the youth to go to college. Never in my lifetime did I think I would see adults find something wrong with higher education. Boy, was I wrong. On a recent episode of “Varny & Co” on Fox Business, Stuart Varney and his two guests did just that.Â
In the clip Stuart and his guests criticize Michelle Obama for encouraging youth to go to college in their rap song, using student loan debt and lack of jobs as their reasoning. “Maybe vocational school is better. Maybe some people you don’t need college,” said Tammy Bruce, who holds a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Southern California and is currently a PHD candidate at Claremont Graduate University. “Clearly people who graduated from college are probably thinking they didn’t need college.”
If you don’t need college Tammy, why did you go back for your PhD? What about Stuart Varney who graduated from the London School of Economics?Â
I find it ironic that three journalists, who graduated from college and most likely encouraged their own children to go to college, would sit on television and chastise the First Lady for encouraging (not forcing, but encouraging) the same from America’s children. Excuse me, America’s BLACK children. Â I will be the first to tell you that college is not for everyone and that it is a myth that just because you graduate from college, you’re guaranteed a high paying job. However, I would never tell someone who wanted to go, not to. Nor would I criticize someone for encouraging the youth to pursue higher education. When I look at that panel, I do not see three individuals who attended vocational school. I do not see medical billers and HVAC specialists. I see three individuals who attended whatever top college their privilege afforded them, and graduated, found a decent job and don’t have to “want” for much of anything. I also see three individuals that seem to be afraid of the urban community gaining knowledge and taking those jobs from them.
Let’s think about who Michelle Obama’s rap song truly targets; young kids who look just like her. There’s nothing more scary than a young black person with a degree. This panel is not concerned with the lack of jobs, or student loan debt, they just don’t want black people to be anything greater than handymen. Ain’t nothing scarier than a smart n*gger.
I understand that it is Fox News’ agenda to condemn everything the Obama Administration does, but is this not taking it too far?Â
