Erika Reidt, a hispanic woman who freelances at Fox Deportes, has been suspended after a comment she made on social media. File this one under more minorities who think brown skin problems aren’t still their problems.
Under a photo of Kobe Bryant and the Lakers wearing an “I Can’t Breathe” t-shirt in support of Eric Garner yesterday, Reidt commented “I’m gonna start wearing a shirt that says ‘I can breathe because I obey the law.’” It was only minutes before Twitter saw her comment and ripped the reporter to shreds, even notifying her employer of the vile comment. Daniella Pedrozo should have warned her, what you say online WILL be held against you.
After the flurry of backlash she received, Reidt claimed she was hacked. “I want to clarify in regards to the comment about Eric Garner, my account was hacked & apparently that comment was posted without my consent,” she tweeted. Daniella Pedrozo should have warned her that doesn’t work either. Erika Reidt claimed that she was out for a run when someone posted that comment to her Instagram account. Yeah, okay. Then how does that explain her co-signing the comment on her Twitter account?
The social media dragging of Erika Reidt went on for quite some time. Erika eventually deleted her comment and made a statement saying that there’s no way she could be racist because she grew up in the hood. “I was raised in the hood and know the struggles our minority communities go through,” Reidt tweeted. “I pray we become the system and abolish all racism.” After tweeting about being raised in the hood, Black Twitter took it upon themselves to troll her with Useless Hood Facts, asking her questions that only those truly raised in the hood would know. She failed most of them but that’s besides the point.
Her “I was raised in the hood” defense is about as bad as “I voted for Obama” and “My best friend is black”.
Fox Deportes responded to the matter pretty quickly, suspending the reporter indefinitely. “FOX Deportes is investigating the comments made by freelancer Erika Reidt and has suspended her until further notice,” the news channel tweeted.
Erika has since deleted her Twitter account. Hopefully she opens a LinkedIn account so she can start looking for work.
