It’s all about Jameis Winston today apparently. We posted earlier about Jameis’ decision to leave Florida State and declare for the draft. Well, in other Jameis news, the Orlando Sentinel is reporting that the woman who accused the quarterback of rape back in December 2012 has decided to file a federal lawsuit against the university’s trustees. According to the lawsuit, she claims that Florida State violated her Title IX rights by providing a “clearly unreasonable response” after the incident and allowing a “hostile educational environment.” The complaint also accuses the university of “hindering the Tallahassee Police Department’s investigation of the case so that Winston’s FSU football career would be unaffected.” She adds that she felt she wasn’t safe at the school, which led to her dropping out in November 2013. “FSU became a sexually hostile environment where her rapist roamed free and could turn up at any moment, where she became the target of death threats and vilification campaigns,” the complaint reads. The woman is asking for a trial by jury and payment for damages which include “reimbursement and payment for her education expenses; payment of expenses incurred as a result of the sexual assault; damages for emotional pain and suffering, loss of enjoyment of life and lost future earnings”.
This seems like the case that will never die. On the one hand, there’s been many situations where a woman has tried to take advantage of a man who’s in the spotlight by wrongly accusing him of a crime in order to get a little fame and money. On the other hand, there are also many cases where the victim is ignored and even blamed and the problem is swept under the rug all because the accused is a big star who people worship. And in this case, she does seem to be going pretty hard to get justice. What do y’all think of the situation?
