Thursday, rapper G Herbo was sentenced to three years of probation after pleading guilty to his charges related to a credit card fraud scheme.
Back in 2020, the rapper along with five others, was charged in a federal indictment accusing them of being involved in a scam to use funds obtained fraudulently to finance a luxurious lifestyle that included private jets, designer puppies, and a vacation villa in Jamaica, among other things.
Last year, G Herbo, real name Herbert Wright III, made an agreement with prosecutors in Massachusetts. As part of the deal, he pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and one count of making false statements. In return, prosecutors dropped several charges of aggravated identity theft against him.
“I would like to give a most sincere apology to the court; I want to say sorry to the victims and anyone who was affected by my wrongdoing,” Herbo said in court, according to Mass Live. “This has been one of my hardest times in life.”
In addition to his probation sentence, the rapper was also ordered to pay restitution and forfeiture totaling $139,968 each, coupled with a $5,500 fine. The fines are in addition to the earlier agreed-upon forfeiture of $140,000. This amount represents his gains from what prosecutors have described as a $1.5 million scheme involving several other individuals.
“On social media, Mr. Wright boasted an extravagant lifestyle. He gave the impression that his use of private jets, luxury cars and tropical villas were the legitimate fruits of his booming rap career as ‘G Herbo,’” Acting United States Attorney Joshua Levy said in a statement. “However, his lavish lifestyle was shamelessly built on deceit and fraud using stolen account information that inflicted substantial harm on numerous businesses, leaving a wake of victims burdened with financial losses.”
Prosecutors initially proposed a sentence of one year and one day in jail, followed by 36 months of supervised release. However, the defense representing the rapper advocated for probation, emphasizing G Herbo’s expressed regret for his crimes. They also noted his community involvement and his personal growth “as a human being, as a family man and as a father.”
