On Saturday night, police fatally shot a man during a routine traffic stop.
Authorities say Maurice Sentel Mincey, 36, was shot and killed after getting out of the car’s passenger side and pointing a gun at the officers. He was pronounced dead at the scene, the GBI stated.
Savannah police stopped the vehicle after it passed a stop sign without stopping on east Bolton Street. Officer talked to the driver of the car and noticed that a passenger inside was moving around. Mincey did not obey the officers’ commands to stop moving or to show his hands.
“Mincey refused to do as instructed and suddenly stepped out of the vehicle,” the GBI said. “Mincey then pointed a firearm at officers, and an officer fired gunshots at Mincey, striking him.”
No officers were injured during the incident.
It marks the 54th shooting involving law enforcement that the GBI has been asked to investigate this year, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution newspaper reported.
