Gabrielle Union’s spoke Monday morning publicly about standing up for herself in the workplace while on the Power of Inclusivity and the Women Leading the Charge panel.
The 47-year-old actress urged the crowd to stand up for themselves against misogyny and racism even if it means sacrificing an opportunity. She emphasized not being “the happy negro that does the bidding of the status quo.”
The actress, whose unjust firing from America’s Got Talent made headlines, added that “It’s terrifying. There’s a solid chance you’ll lose your job … I speak from experience.” It has been alleged that Gabrielle was fired because she reported uncomfortable working conditions, including racially insensitive situations on set to being heavily criticized about her hair, wardrobe, and physical appearance.
According to Variety, Gabrielle told the panel that she was willing to risk it all, despite potentially losing money in the process.
“How many checks do I need? This financial freedom, they’re shackles, masquerading as zeros in my bank account,” she said.
NBC has since launched an investigation into the incidents to determine whether or not show creator and judge, Simon Cowell took unfair action against Union. SAG-AFTRA has also launched its own investigation into the working environment on the show.
