The hit show ‘Game of Thrones’ became a huge part of pop culture and a hot topic of conversation for many throughout the years. While many mixed feelings were surrounding the finale of the eighth and final season of the show, it looks like the possibility of an alternate ending isn’t off the table for the book series. Author George R.R. Martin says that the show’s ending is not going to affect how he decides to end the long-awaited follow-up books in the ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’ series, that served as the show’s basis.
Martin spoke with the ‘Observer’ and explained that the show “Doesn’t change anything at all… You can’t please everybody, so you’ve got to please yourself.” He also added that the show completely changed his life, but not entirely for the better. He says, he can attribute a lot of the delays on the final books in the ‘A Song of Ice and Fire ‘series to the show: “There were a couple of years where, if I could have finished the book, I could have stayed ahead of the show for another couple of years, and the stress was enormous.”
Martin added “Every day I sat down to write and even if I had a good day — and a good day for me is three or four pages — I’d feel terrible because I’d be thinking: ‘My God, I have to finish the book. I’ve only written four pages when I should have written 40.’”
Despite previously having the pressure of the world to keep up with the television series, Martin now says that “having the show finish is freeing, because I’m at my own pace now. I have good days, and I have bad days, and the stress is far less, although it’s still there.”
