After over 13 years of waking up America, Gayle King is reportedly stepping away from the anchor chair at “CBS Mornings” next year. Insiders familiar with the situation say King is likely to leave her morning show role when her contract wraps in May.
Though talks haven’t officially begun, CBS is reportedly exploring ways to keep King in-house. One option includes giving her space to produce new programming. The move mirrors recent shifts at the network, like Norah O’Donnell transitioning to a correspondent role after leaving the evening news desk.
A CBS News spokesperson told Variety, “There have been no discussions with Gayle about her contract that runs through May 2026. She’s a truly valued part of CBS, and we look forward to engaging with her about the future.” Her attorney, Lawrence Shire, declined to comment.
As Paramount’s sale to Skydance Media approaches, CBS News is in reboot mode. Bari Weiss recently took over as editor in chief, with a goal to broaden the network’s reach. For viewers, the possible loss of King is more than just a lineup change. Her presence has been a cornerstone of CBS’s morning strategy since 2012.
The news veteran has not yet spoken publicly about her exit.
