A gas explosion at a Georgia apartment complex left the building destroyed and injured four people on Sunday.
The explosion happened around 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Arrive Perimeter located in Dunwoody, Georgia, the New York Post reported.
Videos of the scene showed severe structural damage.
Four people were transported to the hospital for minor injuries, DeKalb County Rescue Captain Jaeson Daniles told Atlanta’s Fox 5.
Carter said the cause of the explosion is still under investigation. However, a local utility company confirmed that it did receive a call from a resident reporting a strong gas odor shortly before the blast.
Luckily, police arrived at the complex moments before the blast and encountered a heavy gas smell, prompting them to try to evacuate residents, according to WSB-TV.
“At 1:24 pm, we received calls regarding an explosion at the Arrive Apartments,” police wrote in a tweet.
“We are on scene with the Dekalb Co. and Sandy Springs Fire Dept. This is a very active scene, and the cause of the explosion is under investigation.”
One resident told CBS 46 he had complained to the housing manager that morning about a “thick” gas smell in his hallway. The manager told him it had been taken care of.
As he and his wife left for church around 10:30 a.m., the man joked, “I feel if you light a match in here, then the whole building’s going up.”
“Apparently, a lot of people have been complaining about gas leaks here, especially recently,” he added. The unidentified tenant heard about the catastrophe from his sister.
“She said, ‘Your building just blew up,’” he said, adding that he hasn’t yet been allowed back into his home and was worried about the fate of his two cats.
A helicopter and drone circled above the wrecked structure. The building and several others in the area were evacuated. Residents were told that Monday was the earliest they could return to their homes.
