Donald Trump faces a new set of criminal charges from a Georgia grand jury.
On Monday, Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis brought on the charges with claims that Trump attempted to overturn the 2020 election loss to Joe Biden.
A 98-page indictment outlined 41 criminal counts against 19 defendants, including notable figures like Mark Meadows, former White House chief of staff, and lawyers Rudy Giuliani and John Eastman. All have been charged with racketeering, a penalty that can result in up to 20 years in prison.
The indictment said, “Trump and the other defendants charged in this indictment refused to accept that Trump lost, and they knowingly and willfully joined a conspiracy to unlawfully change the outcome of the election in favor of Trump.”
The case centers on a January 2, 2021, call in which Trump pressed Georgia’s top election official, Brad Raffensperger, to find votes to reverse his narrow loss in the state. Raffensperger declined.
Following this, Trump supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol four days later, attempting unsuccessfully to obstruct lawmakers from confirming Biden’s victory.
The indictment lists alleged crimes, including false testimony about election fraud and urging state officials to alter results. It also references the breach of a rural Georgia voting system and the harassment of an election worker.
So far, Trump has refuted any misconduct allegations and accused Willis, a Democratic official in office, of having political motives. He has previously entered a not-guilty plea in three separate criminal cases.
He faces trials in New York (starting March 25, 2024) for a hush money case and in Florida (beginning May 20) for a classified documents case. He’s pleaded not guilty in both instances.
In a separate case, Trump faces a third indictment in a federal court in Washington, alleging he unlawfully attempted to overturn his 2020 election loss. Trump also maintains his innocence in this matter, and a trial date has not been established.
