The shooting death of a man by DeKalb County Police marks the 100th officer-involved shooting being investigated by the Georgia Bureau of Investigations (GBI) this year alone.
Officers responded to a call regarding a stolen vehicle that was parked in the driveway of a home in the 900 block of Autumn Crest Court around 11 p.m. Friday, GBI spokeswoman Nelly Miles confirmed. As officers were investigating, the matter, they encountered a man inside the home.
Officers identified themselves and gave the man several commands, but he did not comply. The suspect then reached for a nearby handgun and was shot by officers, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.
The man, was identified as 36-year-old Marando Salmon. He was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital, where he later died. No officers were injured in the incident.
The GBI will conduct an independent investigation.
Not even 24 hours before, a man walking on a Gwinnett soccer field around 8:30 a.m. with a “replica gun” was shot by Gwinnett police, officials announced. The man died in the hospital, where officers found a note that was addressed to Gwinnett police. The replica gun, which authorities said the man pointed at officers before he was shot, was found at the scene.
Last year, the state agency investigated 100 officer-involved shootings by Dec. 27. By Nov. 4 of last year, the GBI had investigated 83.
