On Thursday, Boxer Gervonta Davis entered a guilty plea to four counts related to a hit-and-run crash in November 2020 causing injuries to four individuals, including a pregnant woman. Â Davis, who is 28 years old, had been set to go to trial but instead waived that right. Â He pleaded guilty to several traffic offenses, including leaving the scene of an accident that resulted in bodily harm, driving with a revoked license, failing to notify of property damage, and running a red light. Â The sentencing for Davis is scheduled for May 5, and the presiding judge warned him that there is no agreement on his penalty. Â Davis did not comment after leaving the courtroom, and his lawyer declined to make a statement.
According to the prosecution, Davis left a downtown Baltimore club around 2 a.m. on November 5, 2020, and drove a Lamborghini under police escort. Â He veered away from the caravan and ran a red light, colliding with a 2004 Toyota Solara on the passenger side. Â Davis is accused of fleeing the scene of the accident, which involved four people, including Jyair Smith, a pregnant woman. Â Prosecutors allege that Davis made eye contact with Smith but did not offer any assistance. Â Smith is scheduled to speak before Davis’ sentencing.
Last year, it appeared that Davis’ case was nearing a resolution, but a Baltimore Circuit Court judge declined to approve a plea deal that allowed Davis to avoid jail time and instead serve 60 days of house arrest. Â Davis is also due to appear in court in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on February 23 to face a misdemeanor domestic violence charge related to an alleged incident on December 27. Â Davis pleaded not guilty to the charge, which alleges that he struck the mother of his one-year-old daughter with a closed-hand slap, causing a minor abrasion on her upper lip. Â The woman has since filed an affidavit asking the court to dismiss the charges.
Despite his legal troubles, Davis is reportedly close to finalizing a deal for a super-fight against Ryan Garcia, which is planned for April 15 in Las Vegas. Â The fight would be contested at a 136-pound catchweight. Â Davis has an impressive professional record of 28 wins and 26 knockouts.
