A North Carolina girl who accidentally shot herself on Christmas has passed away.

Three-year-old Aylee Gordon passed away this past Tuesday after she accidentally shot herself with a gun that belonged to someone who was visiting her family’s home for the holiday. According to the New York Post, the toddler got ahold of the gun from the person’s car.

The news outlet reports that the incident happened on Saturday afternoon around 2:30 p.m. “She picked it up and it went off,” says her father, Capt. Tim Gordon, a retired officer from the Henderson County Sheriff’s Department.

The girl was pronounced dead at Mission Hospital in Ashville. The New York Post reports that police are considering criminal charges in the matter. Aylee is now one of the 1,046 children who are under age 11 who have died or been injured by guns in 2021, the news outlet reports.
