Three weeks ago, a girl that goes by the name of “N. Award” of Australia, posted a pretty epic drawing of Young Thug on her Instagram page. Little did she know that this piece of art would catch the eye of Young Thug and his team, becoming the cover of his forthcoming Slime Season 3 project.
It didn’t take long before folks did their research and realized where the artwork came from. The entire thing became quite the ordeal because unfortunately, the art was taken without the artist’s knowledge. Not only that, no attempt was made for her to be paid, despite the fact that Slime Season 3 is going on sale, not a free album.
Fano, Young Thug’s frequent art collaborator, came under fire. Many thought he had something to do with the original artist’s work being hijacked. He quickly took to Reddit to clear things up, saying that he never claimed the art, all he did was change some colors.
“Thought I’d clear some things up,” Fano tells Reddit. “I had nothing to do with choosing this album art. Thug randomly picked her picture and it was sent to me and asked to be edited. No one in the camp knew who created the original until yesterday. We tried to find the original artist before release to no avail. I spoke to her yesterday and she IS being compensated for her work. I never claimed to be the creator of the cover nor did I put my logo on it. The altered cartoon version that was made by me was just fan art and a reinterpretation of the cover. I was not paid for it and I tagged her as soon as I found out.”
Now if what Fano says is true, and Thug picked a picture at random, how hard would it be to narrow down where the image came from? Someone from his team could have left a comment or DM, asking where the original image came from, I’m sure. Even better, Thug could have just stuck to having Fano do his work. Did he anticipate that no one would think anything of it?
According to Reddit, Young Thug’s girlfriend ‘Liked’ the post of the original picture (from the original artist) on Instagram, before reposting it herself. This doesn’t really help Thug’s case.
Luckily for the original artist, N. Award, all the hype worked in her favor. “Thanks everyone for the support!! i’ve been in contact with some of the people involved and we’re in the process of getting it sorted out,” she posted on Instagram. Hopefully things do get sorted out and she’s properly compensated for her work.
