Rumors that Google abandoned its Pixel Watch project may not be true now that a new report from a well-known leaker gives us an early look at the Pixel watch.
According to BGR, the watch would be the first Google smartwatch launched under the Pixel brand.
Leaker and YouTuber Jon Prosser have predicted several accurate leaks in the past, which primarily focused on Apple products. Every once in a while, Prosser offers leaks on Pixel and Galaxy. This time around, it’s on Google’s smartwatch plan.
On Friday, Prosser said a chip shortage forced Google to cancel the Pixel 5a—a phone that was expected to come out over the coming months, following a Google I/O 2021 reveal. But Google announced the new Pixel 5a series.
Prosser also offered renders of this first-gen Pixel Watch. According to the renders, the watch has a circular screen, similar to Samsung’s Galaxy Watch. That particular form factor makes it different from the Apple Watch. However, most watches have a circular watch face, with Motorola’s Moto 360 line having made round smartwatches mainstream back when Google was competing in the wearable business, the outlet reported.
The device will likely run on a new version of Wear OS, and Prosser’s renders might not be confirmed for a while, but seeing Google announce new Wear OS features at Google I/O in May could be a sign that it is ready to take another shot at watches.
The marketing materials that Prosser saw indicate the operating system will give users a simple, uncluttered interface that will have clear information, whether it’s health data or “your world.” Google is hoping to offer users information “at a glance on that round, bezel-less display.”
It’s expected that consumers can choose between 20 band options.
The Pixel Watch will likely release this fall alongside the Pixel 6, BGR reported.
