Republican Senator Pat Toomey called for Trump to resign for his role and the handling of the riots carried out by his supporters at the US Capitol last Wednesday.
According to the NY Post, Toomey doubts there is enough time left in his presidency for any impeachment efforts to make its way through the channels of Congress.
The Pennsylvania lawmaker told NBC’s “Meet The Press,” “I think the best way for our country … is for the president to resign and go away as soon as possible. I acknowledge that may not be likely, but I think that would be best.”
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has already said an article of impeachment over “inciting a riot” had been drafted, and it could be presented to the House as early as Monday and voted on by the end of the week.
Trump’s own VP, Mike Pence, has seemed reluctant to invoke the 25th Amendment, while Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell claimed senators would not have time to take it up until a day before President-Elect Joe Biden is set to be sworn in.
“It does not look as though there is the will or the consensus to exercise the 25th Amendment option. And I don’t think there’s time to do an impeachment. There’s 10 days left before the president leaves anyway. I think the best thing would be a resignation,” Toomey told MTP.
